How to Involve Consumers in Health and Medical Research

How to Involve Consumers in Health and Medical Research

A step-by-step guide for organisations, researchers, consumers and funders.

About This Course

CCI refers to consumer and community involvement in health and medical research. Consumer refers to someone who has lived experience of an illness, either as a patient or carer.

Health and medical research is strengthened by the involvement of people with lived experience of a health condition and/or the health system. This course recognises four stakeholders in the Consumer Involvement ecosystem: Organisations, Researchers, Consumers and Funders and features four modules, one for each stakeholder group.

While each module can be completed individually, it is recommended to complete all four for a comprehensive understanding.

This course will provide:

  1. an understanding of the importance and benefits of involving consumers in health research
  2. an appreciation of the roles and obligations of organisations, researchers, consumers and funders for successful consumer involvement
  3. the knowledge and skills for embedding and sustaining consumer involvement in all areas of your research

This course accompanies:

  1. the CCI Handbook, a step-by-step guide
  2. the CCI Audit Tool, a self-help resource for assessing the extent and nature of CCI in an organisation and/or project
